Iridium
One
system, globally
The Iridium Satellite System is the only provider of truly global, truly
mobile satellite voice and data solutions with complete coverage of the
Earth (including oceans, airways and extreme Polar regions).
Through a constellation of 66 low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellites operated
by Boeing, Iridium delivers essential communications services to and from
remote areas where terrestrial communications are not available.
The service is ideally suited for industrial applications such as heavy
construction, defense/military, emergency services, maritime, mining,
forestry, oil and gas and aviation. Iridium currently provides services
to the United States Department of Defense and launched commercial service
in March 2001.
7E is an authorised service provider of Iridium, and distributor of the Iridium
9555 handset as a stock item.
Coverage
Iridium Satellite services are available virtually anywhere in the world. Due to United States laws, Iridium Satellite is prohibited from providing products and service to the following countries:
- Taliban controlled Afghanistan
- Cuba
- Iran
- North Korea
- Syria and Sudan
The Iridium network will work in every country, oceans and airways. The only country in which the iridium signal is blocked, due to licensing reasons, is North Korea.
Hungary and Poland, formerly restricted, are open - (some sources have old information stating that these areas are still restricted). North Sri Lanka was opened to assist the tsunami victims and aid workers a few years ago following the tsunami on December 26, 2004.
That said, for questions whether an Iridium phone may be taken into a specific country, it is recommended that Iridium users contact their local Consulate or Customs offices for the latest information on issues with regard to exporting Iridium products. Since Iridium does not determine this information, each country is different and regulations may change without notice; it is best to check with the local Consulate or Customs offices for current details.
Iridium operates globally pursuant to the GMPCS MOU, see this list of countries (opens new window).
